According to Capcom, the game sold relatively well and in line with their expectations. The game's larger emphasis on moment-to-moment action and scripted sequences also disappointed some critics. It was ,however, criticized for its short length, pacing, and absence of elements from the original game. The game received generally favorable reviews, with praise for its graphics, presentation, and gameplay. Versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are set for release in late 2022. These are the standard version, the most censored, and the "Z Version", the least. As with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the Resident Evil 2 remake, Resident Evil 3 is using the RE Engine, and in Japan it released in two versions relating to local censorship. The game was released along with an online multiplayer mode Resident Evil: Resistance.
